Introduction

The metabolome is the complete set of all small molecule (<1500 Da) metabolites found in a specific cell, organ or organism. Together with the genome, the transcriptome and the proteome, the metabolome is considered to be the fourth ‘omic’ building block of systems biology. Constituting the proverbial ‘last mile’ in the ‘genotype to phenotype’ paradigm, the metabolome encompasses perhaps the largest number of ‘clues’ for understanding the molecular basis of phenotypes. Due to its power to detect broad, including unknown, classes of compounds, metabolomics today is poised for the identification of metabolic network modules which are affected by developmental, genetic and environmental changes.
Objectives

This is the homepage of a project sanctioned through the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Govt. of India, which has the following objectives:

1. Develop a metabolomic database using SQL and XML platforms for effective and efficient handling of the volume and complexity of metabolomic data.
2. Capture, secure, serve data and provide tools for analysis back to experimentalists.
3. Develop models of metabolite pathway networking and validate models against transcriptome / metabolome and proteome data obtained.
4. In concert with other experimental groups in the plant metabolomics network, develop software suitable for predicting networks of metabolite formation, analysis / storage and retrieval of metabolites.

Organization of Work Elements

The work will be carried out at two institutes: IIIT Hyderabad and JNU, New Delhi. The duration of the project is five years (September, 2011-2016).

1. Metabolomics database, metabolomic LIMS and data standards (IIIT-H)
2. Spectral analysis tools for metabolomics (JNU)
3. Bioinformatics, systems and metabolomic modeling (IIIT-H+JNU)
